Truro City, under the management of John Askey, secured a 2-1 win against a Welling United side reduced to 10 men, a result Askey highlighted as proof of his team’s winning mentality. This extends Truro City’s current unbeaten streak to eight matches. Welling initially took the lead midway through the first half with a goal from Zain Walker. However, Truro quickly responded, with Jaze Kabia levelling the score seven minutes later by capitalizing on a loose ball following Christian Oxlade-Camberlain’s long throw. Tom Harrison then sealed the win for Truro, heading in Kabia’s floated cross another seven minutes later. Early in the second half, Dave Winfield of Welling United received a second booking, leading to his dismissal and leaving the hosts to finish the match with 10 players. Reflecting on the performance, Askey commented to BBC Radio Cornwall: “I think it showed that they’re used to winning. So when we went a goal behind we didn’t panic, we just kept doing what we’ve been doing for the last few weeks and luckily today it’s gone for us.” This victory maintains Truro’s second-place position in the National League South standings. They share 31 points with the new leaders, Weston-super-Mare, who currently hold a game in hand and a better goal difference. Eastbourne Borough, previously at the top, now sit in third place, also with 31 points, but have played one more game than Truro and possess a goal difference nine goals inferior to the Cornish team. Askey further elaborated on the match, stating: “All the chances that were created were by us. The goal that they scored was a wicked deflection, I think it was going out for a corner and then it’s hit Will and gone in. But the players have done really well to respond from going 1-0 down, and to come back in the nature that they did shows a lot of character again. I was really pleased with how we played first half, second half we just had to see the game out really.” He also noted: “We were unlucky not to have more goals, Jay’s in particular was really unlucky, one that bounced over the bar. But it’s a good team performance and I think it showed that they’re used to winning, so when we went a goal behind we didn’t panic, we just kept doing what we’ve been doing for the last few weeks and luckily today it’s gone for us.” Discussing the team’s aspirations, Askey stated: “If you want to achieve something, then it does tend to test your mentality, and again the players have stood up to that and come away as deserved winners. how far….Who knows. We’ve just got to keep it going, keep our heads down. It’s still early days, so one thing is that the players are confident. Luckily, at the moment we’ve not really had many injuries not too many suspensions, so we’ve been able to feel field a strong team every week. I think the time will come when we get a little bit further down the line when we start to get one or two injuries and we need to bring more players in, and at the moment we are struggling to do that. But the players that are playing are more than capable of achieving something.”
