Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embiid has received a three-game suspension for an incident involving a journalist, whom he pushed. He has not yet played for the team this season. The incident occurred after the 2023 NBA Most Valuable Player shoved a columnist for the Philadelphia Inquirer. This action followed the reporter’s publication of a critical article that mentioned Embiid’s son and late brother, in addition to critiquing his fitness and professionalism. The confrontation took place following the 76ers’ 124-107 defeat against the Memphis Grizzlies on Saturday. Embiid, who is a seven-time All-Star, has not participated in any games this season due to an ongoing knee issue. In a statement, Joe Dumars, the league’s executive vice-president and head of basketball operations, commented, “Mutual respect is paramount to the relationship between players and media in the NBA.” He further stated, “While we understand Joel was offended by the personal nature of the original version of the reporter’s column, interactions must remain professional on both sides and can never turn physical.” Without Embiid, the Philadelphia team has secured only one victory in their initial six games of the season.
