Scotstown secured a victory against Kilcoo in last year’s provincial quarter-final in Newry, courtesy of a last-minute free kick from Rory Beggan. The Ulster Club Football Championship has reached its critical semi-final stage this weekend, with all four remaining teams considered strong contenders for the title. The upcoming match between Kilcoo and Scotstown, scheduled for Saturday evening (18:00 GMT) at the Athletic Grounds, is a rematch of last year’s quarter-final. In that previous encounter, Monaghan champions Scotstown achieved a dramatic one-point victory following Rory Beggan’s last-gasp, long-range free. Scotstown defeated Erne Gaels by 13 points a week prior, whereas 2022 All-Ireland champions Kilcoo required the late entry of Conor Laverty to narrowly overcome Crosserlough a week before that. Kilcoo’s current lineup largely resembles their All-Ireland winning team, while Scotstown boasts numerous current and former Monaghan players, such as prominent forward Jack McCarron, Beggan, Ryan O’Toole, Conor McCarthy, Shane McCarey, and brothers Darren and Kieran Hughes. Sunday’s encounter in Newry (15:15 GMT) between Clann Eireann and Errigal Ciaran is also anticipated to be a formidable contest. The Armagh champions will feature three players who started in the All-Ireland Final – Conor Turbitt, Barry McCambridge, and Tiernan Kelly – competing against the Canavan brothers, Darragh and Ruairi, alongside players such as Peter Harte and Joe Oguz. Errigal Ciaran demonstrated a strong performance by comfortably defeating Cargin, a team that had presented significant challenges to two-time consecutive Ulster Champions Glen in the preceding two seasons. Conversely, Clann Eireann mounted a second-half comeback to overcome Newbridge, the team that had defeated Glen in the Derry Final. The Lurgan side advanced despite McCambridge and Kelly performing below their usual high standards. Turbitt, McCambridge, and Kelly are confirmed to participate, having returned on Thursday morning from Armagh’s team holiday in Miami. A win for Clann Eireann would position the Lurgan club to potentially become the first ever to secure both the men’s and women’s Ulster football titles in the same year.
