Lindsey Vonn secured a bronze medal in her final World Championship race in 2019 before her retirement. Now, the three-time Olympic skiing medallist has marked her World Cup return after more than five years away from the sport with an impressive 14th place in the Super G at St Moritz. The 40-year-old American athlete had retired in February 2019 but announced her competitive comeback in November, after undergoing successful knee surgery. Vonn, who has stated her aim to participate in the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy, completed the race in Switzerland with a time of 1:16.36. This placed her 1.18 seconds behind the winner, Cornelia Hutter of Austria. “I felt really good, there’s definitely a lot I have left to give,” Vonn stated to Eurosport. She added, “I really wanted to get to the finish today and be solid. I didn’t want to risk too much, today was not the day to do anything special.” Vonn also commented, “It feels so good to have the nerves, to have the butterflies, to have the adrenaline, and to push yourself.” Concluding her remarks, she said, “I think this is the perfect start and I look forward to trying to improve every race.” Her competitive return earlier this month occurred in Copper Mountain, Colorado. There, she placed 24th out of 45 skiers in the first of her two downhill races at the FIS Fall Festival, and 27th in her second. Vonn earned an Olympic downhill gold medal at the 2010 Winter Games in Vancouver, where she also secured a bronze in the Super-G event. She later obtained another downhill bronze medal in Pyeongchang in 2018. Her World Cup debut occurred in 2000 when she was 16 years old. She subsequently accumulated 20 World Cup titles (including four overall Crystal Globes) and eight World Championship medals, alongside 137 World Cup podium finishes and 82 World Cup victories.
