The Football Association of Ireland has decided not to extend the contract of Republic of Ireland manager Eileen Gleeson, following the team’s unsuccessful bid to qualify for Euro 2025. Gleeson, who previously managed Peamount United, initially took on the role temporarily in August 2023, succeeding Vera Pauw. She was then appointed permanent manager in December of last year. However, a loss to Wales in the second leg of last week’s play-off round meant her team would not participate in the tournament in Switzerland this summer. In their 2024 Nations League group, the Republic of Ireland was drawn with formidable opponents England, Sweden, and France, ultimately finishing at the bottom. Despite this, they secured a notable victory against France in Cork. Nevertheless, their position as a League A team ensured them a spot in the play-offs. They comfortably defeated Georgia with a 9-0 aggregate score, leading to the two-legged encounter with Wales. A 1-1 draw in Cardiff was followed by a 2-1 loss in the decisive leg at the Aviva Stadium. This result signified both the team’s inability to qualify for consecutive major tournaments, following last year’s World Cup, and the conclusion of Gleeson’s existing contract. Although she refrained from discussing her future immediately after the defeat, the FAI board, following a review and a subsequent meeting, opted against offering her a new agreement. Marc Canham, the FAI’s chief football officer, stated: “It is important to recognise the leadership that Eileen brought to our women’s national team in topping our League B in the UEFA Nations League, guiding them into the qualifying play-offs for Euro 2025 and continuing to build on the legacy that has developed over recent years.” The FAI has announced that the process to find Gleeson’s replacement will commence “immediately.” Having assumed leadership after last year’s World Cup in Australia, Eileen Gleeson was unable to guide the Republic of Ireland to a second major tournament. According to Andy Gray of BBC Sport NI: A mere 16 months after Eileen Gleeson was appointed as Vera Pauw’s successor, initially on an interim basis before securing a permanent agreement, the FAI is once again seeking a new manager. Following Pauw’s tumultuous departure, Gleeson took charge, stabilizing the team and becoming a well-liked presence in the dressing room. On-field progress was evident in certain aspects, and the memorable victory against France in Cork will be remembered for a long time. Nevertheless, the primary objective was qualification for Euro 2025, and the Republic of Ireland failed to achieve this, in what is widely considered a missed opportunity. Despite this, it would be regrettable if Gleeson were not offered a future role, considering her contributions to girls’ and women’s football within the Republic of Ireland. Undeniably, she possesses further contributions to make to the sport she is so passionate about, but following Wednesday’s announcement, this will not be in the capacity of her country’s senior manager.
