Joe McCarthy’s sole prior encounter with New Zealand occurred during a defeat in the 2023 World Cup quarter-final. Ireland’s lock, Joe McCarthy, stated that the team would offer “any excuses” regarding a lack of match sharpness when facing the All Blacks on Friday night. The squad led by Andy Farrell has not competed since their drawn series against South Africa in July. In contrast, their adversaries this weekend have participated in nine Test matches during the same period, culminating most recently in a dramatic victory over England on Saturday. Leinster second-row McCarthy commented, “It’s an interesting one whether it’s better to be battle-hardened going into a game or be fresh.” He added that “A lot of our guys have played a lot of games in the URC [United Rugby Championship], which is quite competitive.” McCarthy emphasized the team’s ethos, stating, “We pride ourselves as a group on being able to come together as fast as possible.” He further stated, “Even if it’s the first game up, we don’t ease ourselves into it. We expect to hit the ground running. We don’t have any excuse for not being cohesive because it’s our first game.” Ireland has been preparing for its upcoming four-game autumn schedule through warm weather training conducted in Portugal. McCarthy specifically highlighted the physical intensity of forwards coach Paul O’Connell’s training sessions as optimal preparation for the challenges ahead this month. He also remarked, “It’s great to be over in Portugal.” McCarthy continued, “We have put in some seriously good sessions, they have been tasty enough.” He concluded, “The sessions we have had here prepare you super well for a game. Paulie’s maul sessions and the attack on top of that usually gets you fairly well ready.”
