Raef, a four-year-old from Birmingham, is driven by the ambition of becoming a Formula 1 world champion. He attends weekly lessons at the MPH Karting Academy in Solihull, where he achieves lap speeds of 34mph. He recently had the opportunity to impress Frederik Vesti, a reserve driver for the Mercedes F1 team. The two met for a one-on-one session at the Daytona Karting Track in Tamworth, during which Vesti characterized the young driver as “quite impressive.” Vesti, aged 22, began his own racing career at eight years old, which is later than Raef’s start. Vesti commented, “He’s four years old, so he has got a big advantage on me.” He added, “He’s already quite impressive and it’s just cool to see.” Vesti also outlined the next stages for Raef, stating, “The next step is going racing against other kids of course, learning to pedal… try to overtake and defend, eventually winning his first race.” Raef described his experience racing with Vesti as “fast,” and stated, “I wanted to overtake him.” He conveyed his aspirations to the BBC, saying, “I want to be a Formula 1 driver and zoom and win the World Championships and all the races.” The opportunity for this session arose after Raef’s father, Lionel, encountered Vesti at the Goodwood Festival of Speed during the summer. Upon learning of Raef’s passion for Formula 1, Vesti extended an offer to observe him in action, leading to their meeting. Raef has also impressed his coach, Harry Darby, who believes the young boy possesses the potential to succeed fully in the sport. Darby stated, “The lap times never lie, and he’s producing some extremely quick lap times, to the point where I’m having to do some practising to make sure that he doesn’t beat me.” He further added, “He’s our fastest bambino driver that we’ve ever had in the last five years.” Raef’s training extends beyond the track, as he utilizes a racing simulator at home for practice when not driving a physical kart. His mother, Amardeep, mentioned their efforts to maintain a “perfect balance” between Raef’s racing pursuits and a typical childhood. She noted, “He’s so happy playing with his cousins, meeting with extended family and friends, play dates, going to the park.” His father, Lionel, indicated that the family provides significant encouragement at home. He stated, “We work very hard at home as a family, all supporting him, pushing him to get faster, to get better, practise more.” Regarding Vesti’s visit, Lionel commented, “Having Fred here was just wonderful. “He’s really passionate about motorsport and future generations, and hopefully Raef will be one of those kids to come through.” Post navigation Davies: Birmingham Reclaims Title Momentum Scotland vs. Finland: Team Line-ups Revealed
