The potential installation of new floodlights is being considered for a sports and community centre, forming part of a broader initiative to reactivate the venue. This facility, identified as Sheffield United’s Derek Dooley Community Centre, situated in Weston View, Crookes, has remained closed since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. A proposal concerning the installation of 12 floodlights at the location is scheduled for a decision by councillors on 12 November. The centre’s reopening is reportedly contingent upon its ability to operate during evening hours. Sheffield City Council has documented the receipt of 15 communications expressing opposition to the project, alongside four letters offering support. As reported by the Local Democracy Reporting Service, the proposed 26ft-tall (8m) LED lighting columns have the potential to function until 23:00 GMT. However, a report from the council indicated that the club expressed readiness to restrict their operation to 21:15 on weekdays and 19:15 on weekends. Individuals who voiced objections to the proposals cited worries pertaining to light pollution, a rise in noise and vehicular traffic, elevated air pollution levels, and adverse effects on local wildlife. Conversely, proponents of the plans asserted that the lighting would enhance site security and facilitate the return to use of the pitches.
