Edu has resigned from his position as Arsenal’s sporting director. He initially joined the Gunners as technical director in summer 2019, having previously departed the Brazilian FA, and was subsequently promoted to sporting director in November 2022. The 46-year-old Edu was a player for Arsenal from 2001 to 2005, during which time he secured two league titles, including one as a member of the ‘Invincibles’ squad in the 2003-04 season. “This was an incredibly hard decision to make,” Edu stated on Monday. He added, “Now it is time to pursue a different challenge. Arsenal will always remain in my heart. I wish the club and its supporters only good things and all the very best.” The former midfielder played a significant role in recruiting manager Mikel Arteta to the club. Arsenal subsequently won the FA Cup at the conclusion of Arteta’s inaugural season. Although the team has not secured major silverware since, Edu, collaborating with the Spaniard, has received widespread recognition for contributing to the club’s resurgence as legitimate title contenders. Edu further commented: “Arsenal has given me the opportunity to work with so many amazing people and the chance to be a part of something so special in the club’s history.” He continued, “I’ve loved working with so many great colleagues across our men’s, women’s and academy teams, especially Mikel, who has become a great friend.” In the two preceding seasons, Arsenal concluded their Premier League campaigns as runners-up to champions Manchester City. During Edu’s time in the role, key players such as Captain Martin Odegaard, Ben White, Gabriel, Gabriel Jesus, and Declan Rice were acquired and established themselves as vital members of the squad. However, the signings of players like David Luiz and Willian proved to have a lesser impact. Notably, every member of the starting XI from last Saturday’s match, apart from academy product Bukayo Saka, was signed following Edu’s appointment. Arsenal co-chair Josh Kroenke commented: “We respect Edu’s decision and thank him for his immense contribution and dedication to drive the club forward.” Kroenke added, “Change and evolution is a part of our club. We remain focused on our strategy and winning major trophies. Our succession plan will reflect this continued ambition.” Arsenal has experienced other organizational changes recently, with Richard Garlick assuming the position of managing director at the start of the current season, following the departure of CEO Vinai Venkatesham at the conclusion of the previous campaign. Furthermore, the Gunners are preparing to name James King as director of football operations. King previously served the club before leaving to become general counsel for the Professional Footballers’ Association. The BBC contacted Arsenal for comment regarding the situation, but the club did not provide a statement.
