England’s women’s team suffered an 8-2 defeat against Belgium on Thursday in Hangzhou, marking the conclusion of the China leg of the Pro League. Despite establishing an early two-goal lead, England ultimately saw it overturned. Justine Rasir and Charlotte Englebert contributed to Belgium’s scoring. The inexperienced England squad, led by David Ralph, faced early pressure. Goalkeeper Miriam Pritchard was put in a difficult position by a misplaced pass from Sophie Hamilton, who subsequently had to clear a shot from Astrid Bonami off the goal line. England, however, managed to take the lead late in the first quarter. Megan Crowson scored from just inside the D, capitalizing on a rebound. Millie Giglio extended England’s lead to two goals midway through the second quarter. This goal came after Martha Taylor’s excellent play resulted in a penalty corner. Belgium initiated their comeback late in the first half when Vanessa Blockmans scored from a deflected strike following a penalty corner. Justine Rasir then equalized for Belgium early in the third quarter. The turnaround was completed by Belgium when Stephanie Vanden Borre scored from another penalty corner. Bonami further extended their lead by converting a close-range rebound. Lisa Moors added a fifth goal, scoring through Pritchard’s legs. Charlotte Englebert and Vanden Borre then increased Belgium’s score significantly in the closing minutes of the match. This marks England’s third consecutive loss, resulting in a current record of one win and three defeats. Previously, England had defeated Belgium 3-1 in their initial game, but subsequently experienced consecutive losses against Olympic silver medalists China. David Ralph’s team is scheduled to resume Pro League competition against India in Bhubaneswar on 15 February.
