Construction of a new artificial pitch is set to commence in Suffolk, following a football club’s acquisition of additional financial support aimed at enhancing grassroots sports infrastructure. AFC Sudbury, established in 1999, has been granted £1.1 million by the Premier League, The FA, and the government’s Football Foundation. The club, situated at King’s Marsh, Brundon Lane, intends to allocate these funds towards developing an all-weather 3G pitch, benefiting both its teams and the broader community. Andrew Long, the Chairperson, stated: “After nearly six years of planning, everybody is so pleased to see this project coming into its final stages.” This eagerly anticipated pitch is slated to supersede the club’s existing grass surface, which frequently becomes unusable throughout the winter period. Furthermore, the facility will be accessible to partner clubs, local and community organizations, educational institutions, and the club’s grassroots and academy teams. Management also expresses optimism about extending the use of these facilities to individuals seeking health improvement or requiring rehabilitation sessions. Mr Long further commented: “We look forward to seeing the build process and being able to offer the additional facilities for the community to benefit from.” He continued: “This has only been made possible by the professionalism and support of the Football Foundation and their grant.” He concluded: “We are indebted to everybody who has helped make this project finally come to fruition.” The initiative has also received supplementary backing totaling £165,000 from Babergh District Council and the Belstead Ganzoni Settlement Charitable Trust. Robert Sullivan, the chief executive of the Football Foundation, remarked: “Good quality playing facilities have a transformative impact on physical and mental health.” He added: “They play an important role in bringing people together and strengthening local communities.” Sullivan further stated: “This grant award to AFC Sudbury towards developing a new 3G pitch is fantastic news for the community and will help give more people access to a great place to play.” For updates on Suffolk news, follow BBC Sounds, Facebook, Instagram, and X.
