Roger Stainforth, an 80-year-old from Durham city and a dedicated fitness enthusiast, achieved two gold medals at the British Rowing Indoor Championships. He emerged victorious in both the 2,000m and 500m events within the 80-84 age category. Although he competed against only two other individuals, Mr. Stainforth noted that the number of opponents decreases significantly in his age bracket. He explained that as the age category “goes up and up,” the number of competitors goes “down and down.” He elaborated, stating, “So, it really becomes more like a time trial where I’m competing against the clock and against myself.” The former managing director began participating in the sport at 60 years old with the goal of improving his fitness, and he is currently a member of Durham Amateur Rowing Club. British Rowing, which serves as the sport’s UK governing body, is responsible for organizing the indoor championship. The championship features various events for both men and women across all age groups, encompassing distance races and timed sprints. Having previously established several records for his age group, Mr. Stainforth is now focusing on the World Indoor Rowing Championships scheduled for February, where he anticipates encountering a larger field of competitors. He commented, “There’s one particular competitor from Norway that I have been competing against for many years and there are some US and Australian competitors. We are all around the same level so providing they put their entries in and do the qualifying time that will be a good event.”
