A football organization is encouraging young athletes to contribute their used or unneeded sports apparel and equipment to support financially challenged households. The York City Football Club Foundation has introduced its “Changing Room” initiative, which involves placing blue collection containers in educational institutions and various sports facilities. The foundation is specifically looking for items such as T-shirts, tracksuits, hoodies, football boots, trainers, and shin pads. Steph Aksel, the foundation’s inclusion officer, expressed her expectation that the program would serve as an “effective way to encourage people into physical activity as well as recognising the importance of recycling preloved items.” She further stated: “With the cost-of-living crisis, we are finding more and more families are struggling financially to be able to afford to take part in sport, and the first barrier to access sport can be not having the right clothing or equipment.“Alternatively, we have seen first-hand young people turn up to community-based activities ill-prepared which presents risks to them taking part.“The Changing Room project will not only address that but is aimed at reducing the environmental impact that sports equipment production has on the planet.” Following the contribution of items, personnel and unpaid helpers at the foundation will cleanse and categorize them by type and size before distribution. This initiative was established subsequent to the foundation securing financial support from the National League Trust. Individuals wishing to contribute can place items in the foundation’s blue collection containers situated at York Community Stadium. Additionally, donations will be gathered on matchdays, with foundation volunteers positioned near the mini pitches at the stadium’s entrance.
