Prior to the current season, Yasin Ayari was largely unknown to football enthusiasts beyond Brighton, Blackburn, and Swansea. It is presumed that supporters of Blackburn Rovers and Swansea City were not notably impressed by the Swedish midfielder’s performance during his two loan stints in the Championship last season, where he made little impact. Ayari’s initial trajectory mirrors that of his fellow countryman, Viktor Gyokeres. Gyokeres’s temporary transfers to Swansea and Coventry City were so uneventful that Brighton (the Albion) agreed to sell him to Coventry for £1m. However, three and a half years on, Gyokeres has emerged as a highly sought-after player in European football, with an £85m release clause in his Sporting contract potentially attracting several Premier League clubs reportedly interested in acquiring him. Gyokeres represents a significant talent Brighton allowed to depart. Conversely, Ayari has capitalized on an unforeseen chance to demonstrate his capabilities at Brighton, despite his two previous underwhelming loan periods. Ayari’s unexpected inclusion in Premier League matches was largely due to a confluence of factors: the sales of Pascal Gross and Billy Gilmour, Jack Hinshelwood’s deployment at full-back at the season’s outset, and injuries sustained by James Milner, Matt O’Riley, Brajan Gruda, and Ferdi Kadioglu. Despite the return of these players, Ayari has retained his position in the squad, a testament to his performance. His form has shown continuous improvement with every match, highlighted by a man-of-the-match performance against Liverpool, where he and Hinshelwood played pivotal roles in Brighton’s first-half dominance at Anfield. A notable moment was a pass that left a defender as good as Virgil van Dijk appearing bewildered. Had Georginio Rutter successfully converted the scoring opportunity this pass created, Ayari would have been credited with the season’s top assist to date. Should Ayari sustain his rapid pace of development, his name is expected to become widely recognized throughout English football.
