Ross County has faced criticism in recent seasons concerning its defensive record and the volume of goals conceded. However, the club’s current defensive confidence and strength have been underscored by achieving successive clean sheets in goalless draws against Hibernian and St Mirren. This marks the first occasion in nearly a year that County has secured back-to-back clean sheets in the Premiership. In the previous season, Don Cowie oversaw 15 Premiership matches without his side registering a clean sheet. Conversely, the clean sheet obtained in Paisley was Ross County’s fourth in 12 Premiership matches this season, a figure exceeded only by Celtic and Rangers. The recruitment of Akil Wright and Kacper Lopata is a significant factor behind this newfound defensive solidity. Wright has notably impressed with his strength, pace, and power on the right side of County’s defense. Lopata, who arrived in Dingwall late in the summer transfer window, has become a cohesive force in the backline, distinguished by his aerial ability and resolute defending. The defensive trio of Wright, Lopata, and Ryan Leak has demonstrated the capacity to contend with various opponents, from robust strikers to swift wingers seeking to stretch play and exploit space. Even when adjustments to the backline were required, such as in Paisley when Leak missed the game due to illness and was replaced by Eli Campbell, the defensive unit expertly defended their penalty area for the full 90 minutes. On the rare occasions the defense has been breached, Ross Laidlaw has consistently made crucial saves this season. His penalty save from Greg Kiltie in the first half was commendable, but his stop to deny Jonah Ayunga’s header in the second half was particularly outstanding. Given his performances over the past couple of seasons, questions arise regarding what more he needs to accomplish to earn a Scotland call-up. Ross Morren contributes to the County Corner podcast.
