Wayne Rooney recently identified Swansea City’s captain, Matt Grimes, as the team’s pivotal player, joining several other opposing managers who have lauded Grimes this season. The 29-year-old has consistently demonstrated his reliability and impact in Swansea’s midfield throughout the current campaign. Swansea head coach Luke Williams has consistently commended Grimes’ performance throughout the season and affirmed his agreement with Rooney’s remarks, which followed the Swans’ victory against Plymouth Argyle mid-week. “I totally agree with Wayne’s assessment of our captain,” said the Swansea head coach. “I would suggest that Plymouth did a very good job at trying to limit what Matt Grimes can do. That’s probably how good he is… that they spent a lot of time working on stopping him from being able to control the rhythm of our play. He is like the guy with the [conductor’s] stick.” Grimes is set to captain Swansea again when the team hosts Sunderland this Saturday. Williams anticipates that the former Exeter City player might receive particular focus from Sunderland, known as the Black Cats, but stated that such attention is not uncommon for Grimes. “There’s no doubt he’s a marked man,” Williams added. “He is very highly rated by his opponents and respected by his opponents. We know we have a terrific leader and somebody who is able to play at a very high level, week in, week out, home and away.” “The special measures teams put in don’t stop him. They pose challenges for him, but he is able to overcome them.” Post navigation MK Dons Captain Gilbey Expresses Shame Over Significant Defeat Rangers Manager Philippe Clement’s Post-Match Comments Following 1-0 Victory Over Hearts
