Olympic champion Daniel Wiffen will not participate in the World Short-Course Championships, scheduled to take place in Budapest. The 23-year-old swimmer from County Armagh will not accompany team Ireland to Hungary next month. This decision follows a demanding year for Wiffen, who secured a gold medal in the 800m freestyle and a bronze medal in the 1500m freestyle at the Paris Games during the summer. He also earned two gold medals at the World Aquatic Championships in Doha in February. In an interview with Swimming World, external, Wiffen stated that he “made the decision following a discussion with Swim Ireland performance director Jon Rudd.” Wiffen, a three-time European Short Course champion, has yet to achieve a medal at the world short course event.
