Walsall, an FA Cup participant, attributes its current season’s success in knockout competitions to a “no-fear” philosophy when confronting teams from higher divisions. Jamie Jellis secured Walsall’s winning goal in the 91st minute, following Liam Gordon’s equalizer in the 59th minute. During the 2024-25 season, Mat Sadler’s team has competed in six cup fixtures, achieving victories over four League One clubs, which included a penalty shootout win against local rivals Birmingham City. They also drew with Premier League Leicester City before being eliminated on penalties and defeated Fulham’s under-21s. Alongside their escalating bid for promotion from League Two, a feat they haven’t accomplished in six years, Liam Gordon and Jamie Jellis, who were instrumental in Saturday’s FA Cup triumph over Bolton Wanderers, attribute this success to their conviction that they possess the capability to compete at League One level or above. Gordon conveyed to BBC Radio WM, stating, “It’s our mentality.” He further elaborated on their approach: “We have no fear going into these games against higher opposition.” He suggested this attitude might provide additional motivation, as “It possibly spurs us on a bit more, as we believe we’ll be there next season.” Gordon also mentioned, “A big reason for signing my contract extension was because I knew what the gaffer’s plans were for this season,” concluding, “So it is no surprise to me what is happening now.” Defender Gordon’s equalizing goal, scored before the 60-minute mark and only four minutes after Josh Sheehan had put four-time cup champions Bolton ahead, paved the way for an exciting conclusion. Jellis sealed the victory for the Saddlers by maintaining his composure and scoring a minute into extra time. Midfielder Jellis, having scored his fifth goal of the season, remarked, “I sort of knew I was going to get an opportunity and I thought I’ve just got to take it as it could be the match-winner.” He identifies Darren Byfield, a former Saddlers standout who was Walsall’s extra-time play-off final hero in Cardiff in 2001 and is now a member of the backroom staff, as his primary source of inspiration. Speaking to BBC Radio WM, he stated, “I’ve talked about it a lot with Darren Byfield.” He explained, “It all comes from the confidence and momentum I’m taking into every game. Just thinking that I’m going to get that chance and score.” Jellis added, “It’s not just me. The positivity that runs through the dressing room – we all drive that.” Following their victory over 1958 champions Bolton, Walsall will now face Charlton Athletic, the 1947 FA Cup winners, in round two at Bescot Stadium in early December. The Addicks have been put on notice, as Jellis declared, “We fear nobody at the minute.” He added, “And that’s testimony to the characters we have.” Jamie Jellis and Liam Gordon were talking to BBC Radio WM’s Chris Coles
