Wales full-back Cameron Winnett, who was recognized as the 2023-24 young player of the year by the Welsh Rugby Writers’ Association, has committed to Cardiff by signing a new “long-term” contract, as stated by the club. This agreement ensures his continued presence at the Arms Park. While the specific length of the 21-year-old’s new deal has not been disclosed, Cardiff has confirmed it is a fresh agreement, following a previous contract he signed in January 2024. Winnett, a product of Treorchy, advanced through the Cardiff age-grade system to achieve both regional and Wales honours. He first appeared for the senior team in 2021 and subsequently solidified his position as the region’s primary number 15 during the 2023-24 season. Winnett expressed his enthusiasm for his current club: “I absolutely love playing at the Arms Park and really enjoy being part of a very good group of players, who are building and developing together,” he stated. He added, “I just want to keep improving, and as a group to keep building on what we have been doing in the last two years, to make some big memories in a blue and black jersey.” Matt Sherratt, Cardiff’s head coach, also commented on Winnett’s qualities: “He is a top-quality player and person, who has a great skillset, is very professional and does not get fazed. He is also a homegrown lad that grew up supporting the club and progressed through the pathway here.” Sherratt continued, “He is now playing with a lot of the boys he came through with as well as some he used to look up to and I know how determined he is to bring success to the Arms Park. He has a big future here and in the game in general.” Winnett’s new agreement follows similar contract extensions secured by other Cardiff players, including number eight Alun Lawrence, versatile back Ben Thomas, and hooker and captain Liam Belcher.
