Ulster’s head coach Richie Murphy acknowledged that his squad will need “to come up with a solution” for selecting a back-three for their Champions Cup opening fixture against current titleholders Toulouse next week, following a match against Leinster on Friday night where three backline players sustained injuries. The team’s challenges are compounded by Jacob Stockdale’s “significant” hamstring injury sustained while on Ireland duty last weekend, Robert Baloucoune’s continued absence from play this season, and Aaron Sexton’s departure to pursue a career in the NFL. Furthermore, during their 27-20 defeat to Leinster on Friday night, the northern province was compelled to utilize four distinct players in the left wing position throughout the 80-minute game. Werner Kok, a South African player, began the match in the number 11 jersey but did not pass a head injury assessment [HIA]. His substitute, Ben Moxham, subsequently exited the field appearing to be in considerable discomfort due to a knee injury. Consequently, scrum-half John Cooney was deployed in an emergency capacity on the wing. After he limped off towards the end of the match, back-row player Nick Timoney stepped in to complete the game. As they prepare to travel to the Stade Ernest-Wallon next week, Murphy faces a scarcity of available players. Commenting on the injuries, the head coach stated, “Disappointing obviously and the problem now is we’ve got a shortage around our back-three.” He added, “We’re going to have to come up with a solution and see what that looks like next week.” Regarding Stockdale’s injury, which occurred against Fiji last week, Murphy indicated that the winger would be sidelined for a “good few weeks.” He further elaborated, “Don’t know how long he’s going to be out for at the moment but it’s not a short-term thing.” Murphy concluded, “I don’t know how long it is, but I know it’s not a case of getting him back in a week or two. He’s had a significant hamstring injury and it’s a matter probably of a good few weeks but I haven’t heard an actual time on that yet.”
