Toby Booth, the head coach for Ospreys, has departed from his position immediately, with Mark Jones assuming leadership. Booth and Jones collaborated at Ospreys for a period of 15 months. This change occurs during a week when Ospreys are scheduled to host Scarlets in a local derby match for the United Rugby Championship (URC) on Saturday. In September, Ospreys had previously announced that Booth would conclude his tenure at the close of the 2024-25 season, with defence coach Jones slated for promotion to the head coach role. The Welsh team, under the leadership of chief executive Lance Bradley, had promoted a succession plan that involved Booth remaining in charge for an additional season prior to his exit; however, this transition has now been implemented six months sooner than initially planned. This season, Ospreys have secured only three victories across nine matches, resulting in their drop to 14th position in the URC table. Furthermore, Booth’s team experienced a record European defeat of 59-15 in the Challenge Cup against Montpellier away last Saturday. Following their match against Scarlets, Ospreys are scheduled to play Cardiff on New Year’s Day, with additional European fixtures against Newcastle and Pau set for January. Ospreys flanker Justin Tipuric is expected to continue playing throughout the current season before his retirement and subsequent assumption of the defence coach role for the 2025-26 season. This marks the second coaching alteration within the Welsh professional game this season, following Dragons head coach Dai Flanagan’s departure in November and Filo Tiatia’s appointment to an interim position. An official statement from Ospreys read: “Ospreys Rugby can confirm Toby Booth has departed from his role as head coach with immediate effect.” The statement continued: “Toby joined the Ospreys as head coach in 2020. During his tenure, he led the team to significant achievements, including winning the URC Welsh Shield in both the 2021-22 and 2023-24 seasons. He also guided the Ospreys to the EPCR Challenge Cup quarter-finals and the URC play-offs in the 2023-24 season.” It added: “Ospreys would like to thank Toby for his commitment and contributions to the club during his time in charge and wish him all the best in his future endeavours.” The statement concluded: “Mark Jones will assume the role of head coach with immediate effect, supported by the current coaching staff and management.” Booth previously served as director of rugby for London Irish, spent seven years as a first-team coach at Bath, and held an assistant position with Harlequins. In 2023, he guided Ospreys to a league double over the Scarlets. His tenure with the Swansea-based Ospreys began in the summer of 2020, a period when the team was experiencing significant difficulties, and he was instrumental in improving their performance. The 2023-24 season is considered by some to be his most successful, with Ospreys qualifying for the URC play-offs by securing a top-eight finish and achieving their inaugural European play-off win en route to the Challenge Cup quarter-finals. In the preceding season, Booth supervised Ospreys’ two victories against then-French champions Montpellier in the Champions Cup, prior to their elimination by Saracens in the last 16. During his leadership, Booth provided opportunities to young players, navigating the departure of prominent figures such as Alun Wyn Jones, Rhys Webb, George North, Tomas Francis, Nicky Smith, Gareth Anscombe, and Alex Cuthbert. He achieved a 70% success rate in Welsh derbies, establishing Ospreys as the top team in Wales for two of his four complete seasons at the helm. Wales captains Jac Morgan and Dewi Lake notably thrived under Booth’s guidance during his period with the Welsh region. The initial announcement regarding Booth’s departure, made a year in advance of his scheduled exit, generated controversy. This decision was questioned by former Wales internationals Cuthbert, Jonathan Davies, and Ellis Jenkins, particularly after Ospreys’ weak start to the season. Ospreys suffered a loss in their inaugural match against Dragons, and the nature of their defeat against Montpellier last weekend raised concerns. Booth’s success with Ospreys was founded on a distinct power set-piece strategy; however, the team has lost this fundamental strength over the past year due to numerous forward injuries, particularly in the second row. His exit signifies Jones’s assumption of his first full head coach role at this professional level. The former Wales wing previously held coaching positions with Scarlets, the New Zealand team Crusaders, Wales, and Wales Under-20s, prior to joining Ospreys in August 2023.
