A substantial number of Swedish football supporters have arrived in Manchester to back their club, Hammarby, in their Women’s Champions League match against Manchester City. Hammarby, a team originating from Stockholm’s Sodermalm district, is recognized in women’s football for its considerable and vocal following. Approximately 400 away fans are expected to support them during the game against City at the Joie Stadium in east Manchester. Last week, over 350 Hammarby supporters made an impression on their Catalan hosts despite witnessing a 9-0 defeat by Barcelona. As the players entered the field, the Swedish fans displayed green-and-white flags and their chants overshadowed those of their Spanish counterparts. Comparable vibrant displays were anticipated for Hammarby’s match in Manchester on Tuesday, scheduled for a 20:00 GMT kick-off. Supporter Anna Persson journeyed to Manchester accompanied by her daughter, Alexandra Nyreröd. The 50-year-old, visibly proud in a Hammarby scarf, stated to BBC North West Tonight: “As her mum I’ve taken her to games since she was a baby.” She added, “The club means a lot to us and my family.” Persson also remarked, “In Sweden no club has as many fans as this.” Concluding, she said, “We’d love them to win tonight, but we’ll support them no matter what.” Alexandra, aged 27, further commented: “It’s like a family – it means everything to us.” She continued, “Everyone is included – no matter where you’re from, it doesn’t matter who you are, you’re always welcome to the Hammarby family.” Alexandra emphasized, “This is bigger than football, it’s about supporting women and the women’s game.” Gittan Norder mentioned that she has supported Hammarby since the age of 15. The 61-year-old stated: “To see this support grow over the years, it’s so inspiring to be part of this community.” Another supporter, Simon Sandstrom, 49, remarked: “It’s about the atmosphere we create.” He clarified, “It’s not about the amount of people.” Sandstrom explained, “It started with my daughter – and she wasn’t happy with how little support the team had, so I thought I’ve got to change this.” Zacharias Nilsson, 25, commented: “It means everything to me to be a Hammarby fan. “He added, “It’s my first time in Manchester. The social aspect is the best part but also seeing what we do for the team is also amazing.” Nilsson concluded, “We are making a difference in women’s football and that’s what matters to us.” Listeners can access the best of BBC Radio Manchester on Sounds and connect with BBC Manchester on Facebook, X, and Instagram.
