Football pundit Iwan Roberts suggests that Swansea City is developing the offensive capability necessary to succeed in the Championship, following their win against Derby County on Wednesday. At Pride Park, Swansea scored two goals within the initial 14 minutes, courtesy of Zan Vipotnik and Ronald. They subsequently maintained their lead to secure a 2-1 victory, even though Derby mounted a determined comeback. Prior to this week, Luke Williams’ squad had recorded the fewest goals in the Championship, having netted only 11 times in their initial 15 league matches during the 2024-25 season. However, Roberts, a former Wales international striker, is of the opinion that Swansea has made progress, having scored three goals in their loss to Leeds United last Sunday, preceding their quick two goals against Derby. “Vipotnik’s goal is a great strike – the first touch is unbelievable and the second touch is ridiculous, the power that he generates,” he stated to BBC Radio Wales. He added, “I have not seen enough of him, but that bit of skill alone won me over.” Regarding the second goal, Roberts commented, “The second goal Liam Cullen drops deep, gets on the half-turn and slips the ball in for Ronald, who for once shows the composure to score. Hopefully five goals in the last two games, things are looking up for Swansea in that final third.” Head coach Williams conceded that Swansea was fortunate to secure the win against Derby, considering the intense pressure placed on Lawrence Vigouroux’s goal during the match’s concluding hour. Derby, known as The Rams, created dangerous moments from several set-pieces prior to halftime. In the second half, Kayden Jackson failed to convert an excellent scoring opportunity, and Nathaniel Mendez-Laing’s penalty kick subsequently offered the home team a chance for a recovery. Nevertheless, despite Derby’s dominance, Swansea demonstrated resilience to achieve their third away victory of the current season. Roberts further remarked, “Derby gave it everything in the second half but once again Swansea’s defensive capabilities were outstanding.” He continued, “For 30 minutes in the first half, Swansea were breathtaking with the football they played. One more goal and it would have been game over.” “Credit to Derby, there was a big reaction from them. But when they had to roll their sleeves up, that’s what Swansea did and it’s a fantastic win away from home,” Roberts concluded.
