Following a 1-0 home loss to Millwall last weekend, Swansea City’s period without scoring a goal has now reached 525 minutes of football. The team’s difficulty in scoring has been evident throughout the current season, with their total of eight goals in 12 league games representing the lowest output in the Championship. Their most recent goal was scored against Bristol City on 29 September. Should Luke Williams’ team not score against Oxford United on Saturday, they will match a 28-year-old club record for six consecutive league matches without a goal. The 1995-96 season proved to be a challenging period for Swansea supporters, culminating in the club’s relegation to what is currently known as EFL League Two. The aforementioned record commenced on 6 February 1996. At that time, former Manchester United and Arsenal goalkeeper Jimmy Rimmer was serving as interim manager, having taken over after Bobby Smith’s resignation in December 1995. Under Rimmer’s temporary leadership, Swansea experienced a 3-0 home defeat against Stockport County. Days later, the club controversially named Kevin Cullis (pictured above) as manager. Cullis’s appointment was notable because he had no prior experience playing or coaching in professional football. His sole previous management role was as a youth coach for the non-league club Cradley Town. Cullis’s tenure as manager extended for only two matches. His second and final game saw Swansea defeated 4-0 by Blackpool at Bloomfield Road on 13 February 1996. Following a poor first-half performance, the players disregarded Cullis’s intended half-time team talk, with defender Christian Edwards providing the instructions for the second half instead. Cullis resigned from his managerial role shortly after the final whistle. Less than four days later, Swansea played again, facing Hull City at the Vetch Field, with Rimmer resuming his role as caretaker manager for a second period. Despite Rimmer’s return, Swansea’s goal-scoring difficulties persisted. Following a goalless draw against the Tigers, the Swans suffered a 3-0 loss to Carlisle United at Brunton Park. On 22 February 1996, Swansea announced the appointment of Liverpool legend Jan Molby as player-manager. While his arrival was expected to bring much-needed stability to the Swans, the Danish midfielder’s initial match in charge resulted in a 0-0 draw at York City, which extended Swansea’s goalless streak to the current club record of six league games. Three days later, Steve Torpey ended the 624-minute goal drought with an excellent strike after 36 minutes, contributing to Molby’s side’s 2-1 victory over Walsall, which was only their second win in 18 matches. The current squad aims to conclude a six-game winless streak, but historical performance does not favor them as they prepare to play newly promoted opponents at the Kassam Stadium this weekend. This particular venue has not been a successful location for the Swans in recent years, as Oxford has consistently presented a challenge. Notably, in 2016, former Rangers and Leeds United winger Kemar Roofe scored two goals, leading League Two Oxford to eliminate Premier League Swansea from the FA Cup. Furthermore, Russell Martin’s Swansea team suffered another cup defeat at Oxford in 2022, when they lost in the EFL Cup on penalties after relinquishing a two-goal advantage. The question remains whether Williams’ current Swansea squad will become part of an undesirable chapter in the club’s history by Saturday evening.
