Stephen McDonnell, previously the manager of Warrenpoint, assumed the managerial position at Glenavon in September 2023, succeeding Gary Hamilton. Glenavon Football Club has terminated its association with manager Stephen McDonnell following their 2-0 loss to Dungannon Swifts in the Irish Premiership on Saturday. The Lurgan Blues have secured victory in just three league matches this season and suffered a defeat against Championship team Armagh City in the BetMcLean Cup earlier in the current month. The team currently occupies the 11th position in the Irish Premiership standings, with a mere four-point margin separating them from the last place. “Glenavon FC have tonight parted company with manager Stephen McDonnell,” the club announced. “The club wishes to place on record its thanks to Stephen for his efforts.” McDonnell, whose prior managerial experience included Warrenpoint, was officially appointed in September 2023, taking the place of Gary Hamilton, who had held the role for 12 years. During his inaugural season at the helm, he guided the club to avoid relegation, concluding the season in 10th position. However, following a sequence of seven matches across all competitions without a victory, his tenure at Mourneview Park has concluded.
