Manchester United has expressed interest in appointing Sporting manager Ruben Amorim as their new coach and is prepared to meet his 10 million euros (£8.3 million) release clause, according to the Portuguese club. The Red Devils are seeking a new manager following the dismissal of Erik ten Hag on Monday. “Manchester United have expressed their interest in recruiting coach Ruben Amorim and have said they are ready to pay the 10 million euro release clause,” Sporting stated in a communication to Portugal’s financial regulator, the CMVM. Amorim, 39, is a highly-regarded coach who has secured two Portuguese league titles with Sporting since joining in 2020, including their first in 19 years. United has declined to comment on these reports. Ten Hag’s dismissal occurred after Sunday’s 2-1 defeat at West Ham, which left the club in 14th place in the Premier League with only three victories from their initial nine matches. United also ranks 21st out of 36 teams in the Europa League table, having drawn their three opening fixtures. Ruud van Nistelrooy, who joined the club as Ten Hag’s assistant last summer, has been appointed interim manager and will lead the team for Wednesday’s Carabao Cup tie at home against Leicester City. United’s next Premier League fixture is against Chelsea at Old Trafford on Sunday. During a news conference on Monday, Portuguese manager Amorim acknowledged he anticipated a question about the Manchester United position but stated he was not ready to discuss the matter. Sporting is scheduled to play Nacional in the Portuguese League Cup on Tuesday evening. Amorim, whose contract extends until June 2026, engaged in discussions with West Ham in April, but no agreement was reached, and the Portuguese subsequently apologised to Sporting for conducting negotiations without the club’s knowledge. BBC chief football news reporter Simon Stone suggests this latest development makes it increasingly likely Amorim will be in charge for Manchester United’s Premier League game against Chelsea on Sunday. This would signify a rapid progression, considering United had not anticipated dismissing Ten Hag within 24 hours when the club played against West Ham. Should United convert an initial expression of interest into a formal request to acquire Amorim from Sporting, it would not be an appointment devoid of risks. Firstly, Amorim has never managed outside the Portuguese league. While Sporting is a significant club, United operates on a different magnitude. With the exception of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, every manager who succeeded Sir Alex Ferguson possessed considerably more experience than Amorim, and the intense scrutiny associated with Old Trafford ultimately proved overwhelming for each of them. Several questions also remain unresolved. What is Amorim’s remuneration? What is the duration of his contract? Will funds be allocated for player transfers? How will his favored three-man defensive system integrate with a squad abundant in wingers and attacking midfielders? Will his compatriot Bruno Fernandes maintain the captain’s armband? What will be Van Nistelrooy’s role following the EFL Cup match against Leicester? These are expected to be addressed over the next few days, as part of any subsequent formal announcement and press conference. For now, Amorim is tasked with completing what is highly likely to be his final match as Sporting boss, bidding his goodbyes, and preparing for the most significant challenge of his professional journey. European football expert Guillem Balague notes that Amorim would acknowledge he continues to refine his tactical approaches, but he maintains that football’s essence lies in captivating its audience. Beyond the lessons learned from his former coach Jorge Jesus, Amorim has closely observed individuals demonstrating exceptional leadership qualities, including Jose Mourinho. He is, however, a proponent of exciting, attacking football, characterized by numerous goals, dominance, and command. He aims to entertain spectators.
