A new collection of stamps is set to commemorate some of the most significant milestones in the career of renowned cycling legend Sir Mark Cavendish. In July, “The Manx Missile” secured his 35th victory, making him the most successful stage winner in the history of the Tour de France. Sir Mark, aged 39, is scheduled to receive the Lifetime Achievement gong at the upcoming BBC Sports Personality of the Year awards. The Isle of Man Post Office stated that the eight-stamp collection acknowledges his “outstanding” career. Over a career spanning nearly two decades, Sir Mark achieved 165 victories, notably crossing the finish line first in his final race, the Tour de France Criterium in Singapore in November. A homecoming event honoring the celebrated cyclist’s career took place at the Isle of Man’s National Sports Centre in Douglas during August. The cycleway at the centre, where Sir Mark began competitive cycling as a child, is slated for renaming in his honor next year. The sheetlet, comprising an amalgamation of three earlier stamp issues dedicated to the cyclist, displays images depicting significant moments from his career over the years. These include his participation representing the Isle of Man at the Commonwealth Games, his role in Great Britain’s Olympic team, and his competition in the Tour de France. Furthermore, the collection provides information regarding his career and notable triumphs. Maxine Cannon from the Isle of Man Post Office commented that it was “fitting to mark the retirement of such a legend”. She added: “Always a proud Manxman, he has repeatedly displayed the national flag after taking victory and represented his country at the Island Games and Commonwealth Games.” She concluded: “The island is immensely proud of Mark and everything he has achieved.” The eight-stamp collection, which chronicles Sir Mark’s career, is scheduled for release on 30 December.
