St Johnstone manager Simo Valakari addressed the media in advance of Sunday’s Premiership fixture against Hearts, a match described as a “basement battle.” The following are the key points from the Perth boss: Regarding whether this is Saints’ most significant match of the season, Valakari stated: “As we always say the next game is always the biggest game.” Considering the current league standings of both teams, Valakari acknowledged the “narrative” surrounding the game. He noted that his team is responsible for their current position and that only they “can take us out” of it. He added: “Nothing has changed in our thinking, our process, that we need to take it game by game, then we see after Sunday where we are, we face it and then we move forward.” Valakari highlighted that Hearts possesses skilled players and will also view this match as an opportunity. He conceded that the players are facing a high-pressure situation, but remarked: “these are the moments where we see where we are, how we handle this – if you want to call negative moments”. Concerning his son Paavo joining the coaching staff, Valakari commented: “Yes, he is my son but I think all of you already know me well enough that, yes I can be nice and polite, but for my club I don’t compromise anything. I always pick what is the best for the club and he is a very good coach, he will help us.” Addressing reports that Benjamin Kimpioka had declined contract discussions, Valakari asserted that “there haven’t been any talks,” attributing this to a busy schedule, and adding that “there is absolutely no drama in this situation.” Lewis Neilson is ineligible to play due to the conditions of his loan agreement from Hearts. There are no new injury concerns reported.
