Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder has credited the team’s unity for their strong start to the season, following four consecutive victories. The Blades secured a 1-0 win against Steel City rivals Sheffield Wednesday on Sunday, placing them level on points with Sunderland, the current leaders of the Championship. Last season, United concluded their Premier League campaign at the bottom of the table, accumulating only 16 points and conceding 104 goals. Wilder stated, “We can’t achieve anything when we’re not connected. It’s a word I use a lot.” He added, “We’ll have bumps in the road but what you’ll have is what you see in those last five or 10 minutes when the boys put everything on the line.” He further commented on the previous season, saying, “We were miles off it last year. The club wasn’t prepared to go into the Premier League. I don’t want to get too caught up in it but it was a difficult time.” Wilder concluded, “The players were undercooked and the Premier League is a ruthless division.” Sheffield United would currently hold a two-point lead at the top of the standings if they had not commenced the season with a two-point penalty, which was imposed for failing to make payments to other clubs during their 2022-23 promotion season. The victory on Sunday marked their sixth consecutive clean sheet at home and their tenth in 15 Championship fixtures. Seven of the eleven players who started Sunday’s Sheffield derby were summer acquisitions, reflecting Wilder’s efforts to revitalize the squad. Tyrese Campbell, who scored the winning goal, and Callum O’Hare, who provided the assist, both arrived at the club on free transfers during the summer. Among the new recruits, only goalkeeper Michael Cooper and full-back Harrison Burrows were acquired for transfer fees, coming from Plymouth and Peterborough, respectively. Wilder commended the squad’s attitude displayed throughout the first third of the season, as he aims for his third promotion with his hometown club. He further stated, “It was time to make changes in terms of players and the way we play.” Wilder continued, “A lot of hard work went into the summer recruitment but it’s down to the players and their attitudes. I’m enjoying working with them.” “You’ve seen the scenes at the end, subs who didn’t get on and other players are all going out on the pitch,” Wilder observed, adding, “The way they all get on is fabulous to see.”
