Shane Ryan achieved a new national record in the pool in Budapest on Wednesday. Concurrently, fellow Ireland swimmer Danielle Hill did not advance from her heat in the women’s 100m freestyle event at the World Aquatics Championships in Budapest on Wednesday. Ryan surpassed his own long-standing Irish record to secure progression to the semi-finals. In the concluding men’s 100m freestyle heat of the morning session, Ryan registered a time of 46.23 seconds, securing third place and the sixth fastest qualifying time. The 30-year-old triple Olympian recorded a marginally slower time of 46.24 in his semi-final, which placed him 10th overall at the Duna Arena. His previous Irish record was 46.68, a time he had established five years prior at the Irish Championships. Also on the second day of competition, Larne swimmer Hill completed her heat in 53.66 seconds, finishing eighth. The Paris Olympian had previously failed to progress past the heats of the women’s 100m backstroke on day one, where she finished 18th overall. Niamh Coyne and Eoin Corby also did not advance; Coyne placed ninth in her 100m breaststroke heat with a time of 1:07.40, and Corby finished in the same position in his 100m breaststroke heat.
