A seven-year-old girl has achieved the distinction of becoming the youngest in Norfolk to hold a golf handicap. Hope, who resides just outside Norwich, commenced playing the sport at the age of four and has recently attained a handicap of 54. Hope stated, “I like spending time with my family and going round the course.” England Golf, the governing body for amateur golf, verified this accomplishment to Hope’s family and informed the BBC: “It is fantastic to see girls as young as seven playing golf and getting a handicap.” The organization further added: “Hope should be very proud of obtaining a handicap and it will be exciting to see how far she progresses in the game.” Her family indicated that she aims to emulate both her uncle, who was a professional golfer, and her older brother, who participated in the county team. Her mother, Jo, reported that the family spends every weekend on golf courses and travels across the country, with their most recent trip involving playing in Northern Ireland. Jo commented, “Her standard is pretty incredible, so when I watch her take the shots I’m just blown away, but between shots she’s doing cartwheels and playing with friends.” She further elaborated on the handicap process: “To get a handicap she needs to go round a course three or six times and she gets a level of ability of shots she can take in a competition.” Jo concluded by saying, “She’s worked really, really hard.” A handicap enables golfers of varying abilities to compete more equitably. A lower handicap figure indicates a more skilled player. Hope has been playing with a local academy and expressed her ambition to be selected for the county team. The schoolgirl conveyed that both her mother and her professional golfer uncle were “proud” of her achievement. Upon learning her handicap, she was “really happy” and identified going around the golf course as her greatest enjoyment. Her advice for anyone considering taking up the sport is: “Practise to get better.”
