Scott “Arnie” Arnold, Wimborne Town FC’s all-time record appearance holder, has retired from playing, marking the conclusion of a significant period for the non-league club. His 618th and final game for the Dorset team took place on Tuesday night, where they experienced a 3-0 loss against county rivals Weymouth. Prior to the Dorset Senior Cup match at the Wyatt Stadium, the centre-back informed the BBC that concluding his career felt “surreal” and that accepting “the end of the journey” would require time. However, the full-time carpenter stated his intention to continue attending matches as a supporter, lightheartedly remarking that “it’s nice to be on the other side of it”. Arnold joined the club as an 18-year-old striker and subsequently became an essential component of their defensive line. He commented, “As the body’s aged on me I’ve gone further and further back.” After two decades, he has now made the decision to retire. “It’s been coming for a couple of years, you just know when the time’s right,” he stated. He also mentioned observing difficulties in keeping pace with some of his younger teammates during training sessions. He explained, “Your head’s saying you can do it but your body’s not allowing you and it does really play on your mind.” Arnold acknowledged that balancing his professional work with his football commitments had occasionally been a “burden”. He chuckled as he recounted: “Some days you’re working on a roof, you’re trying to get to the top of it and you’ve got a dead leg from someone whose done you the night before. “It’s really tough but that’s what you take with the non-league scene.”” Reflecting on his career, he identified lifting the trophy following the club’s promotion to the Southern League Premier Division South during the final match of the previous season as a significant highlight. “I’m leaving the club in a much better position than it was in when I came to it – and it’s only getting bigger and bigger,” he affirmed.
