Manchester City’s Rico Lewis was sent off at the weekend after receiving a second yellow card. The foul that led to this card was perceived by some to have been committed against Lewis himself. Current Video Assistant Referee (VAR) protocols do not permit challenges to yellow card decisions. Lewis had previously received a first yellow card for dissent. While acknowledging the impracticality of checking every yellow card due to potential match delays, the incident has prompted discussion regarding whether a second yellow card, particularly if deemed incorrectly issued, should warrant intervention or communication with the referee from officials at Stockley Park. Prior to his sending off, Lewis had scored a significant equalizer. Had he remained on the pitch with 11 men, it has been suggested the team might have achieved a notable victory. Despite his youth, the implications of Lewis’s initial display of dissent are understood to be clear to his manager.
