Matt Richardson, who secured three medals for Australia during his Olympic debut in Paris in the summer, also claimed victories in the men’s sprint and keirin finals at the Track Champions League event in France, competing for Great Britain for the first time since his nationality switch from Australia. The 25-year-old athlete, a native of Kent who relocated to Western Australia at age nine, previously competed for Australia at the Olympics in Paris prior to his decision to represent Britain. Although he had been defeated by Harrie Lavreysen in the men’s sprint final during the Games earlier in the summer, Richardson achieved a notable victory against the Dutch competitor in the same event and at the identical Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines velodrome during the first round of the current Track Champions League season. Richardson executed a maneuver around the outside of Lavreysen, ultimately clinching the win when his rival conceded in the final stretch, unable to maintain pace. Subsequently, in the men’s keirin event, Richardson emerged from Lavreysen’s slipstream and accelerated to claim victory. Richardson commented, “I’ve never beaten Harrie in sprint and keirin on the same night so to do it is pretty cool.” He added, “I had to race well and take confidence for the rest of the series.” Great Britain’s Katie Archibald, who was absent from the Olympics due to a leg fracture sustained in an unusual accident, also demonstrated strong performance by winning both the women’s scratch and elimination races. Archibald successfully fended off Norway’s Anita Stenberg to triumph in the scratch race, then proceeded to win the elimination race. Archibald expressed her satisfaction, stating, “I’m really happy. I’m doing everything to get the best result possible and hold on as long as I can. I’m going to scrap for every single point.” Emma Finucane, representing Great Britain, defeated Martha Bayona of Colombia to secure the win in the women’s sprint, while her fellow countryman Will Perrett was victorious in the men’s elimination race. The subsequent round of the series is scheduled as a double header in Apeldorn, the Netherlands, on 29 and 30 November.
