A racehorse that escaped from its track and subsequently ran through an East Lothian community was located and retrieved over two miles from its starting point. Social media platforms featured video clips depicting Rufio traversing the thoroughfares of Prestonpans, having dislodged jockey Lucy Brown during an event held in Musselburgh. The ten-year-old bay gelding was subsequently brought back to its stables without injury, thanks to the intervention of a civilian who managed to stop it. A representative for Musselburgh Racecourse characterized the incident as an “extremely rare occurrence”. The horse had been listed as a 100/1 outsider for the 15:15 race during the Virgin Bet Christmas Jumper Raceday on Monday. Rufio was leading the race when its jockey was dismounted, and the animal then breached the track’s perimeter fence. Subsequently, the horse was observed on Prestonpans High Street, approximately 2.5 miles (4km) distant, still equipped with its racing saddle and bearing its number seven banner. Racecourse ground personnel successfully located the horse and transported it back to the stables using a horse ambulance. Trainer Gary Rutherford informed BBC Scotland that Rufio was “home safe and well” after the event, further stating that jockey Ms Brown sustained no injuries. A spokesperson for Musselburgh Racecourse issued a statement: “A horse unseated its rider in the last race and made its way out of the racecourse.” “This is an extremely rare occurrence and happily the horse was returned unscathed to the racecourse by our ground staff after its short journey towards Prestonpans.” Post navigation Emma Finucane Named BBC Wales Sports Personality of the Year for 2024 Kyle Bartley Resumes Training with West Brom; Darnell Furlong Approaches Suspension
