Viktor Gyokeres, Sporting Lisbon’s number nine, has emerged as a prominent candidate for clubs looking to strengthen their offensive line during the upcoming January or summer transfer windows. This follows his hat-trick performance against Manchester City in the Champions League on Tuesday, which places him as the joint leading scorer alongside Harry Kane in this season’s premier European club competition. He has also accumulated an impressive record of 66 goals in 67 matches for the current Primeira Liga champions. His recent display against Manchester City, frequently referred to as ‘the best team in the world,’ is likely to have addressed concerns from those who previously questioned whether the quality of football in Portugal matches that of the Premier League. This raises the question of potential destinations for the Sweden international, should an English club acquire him. Given that Gyokeres is expected to command a substantial transfer fee, any prospective club would need to possess significant financial resources and long-term aspirations. The 26-year-old reportedly has a release clause set at 100 million euros (£83 million), a notable figure considering he joined Sporting from Coventry City in 2023 for approximately £20 million. While he was playing for the Championship club, Premier League teams had shown interest in Gyokeres, but it was Sporting that ultimately secured his signature. Currently, English clubs such as Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester United, Manchester City, and Chelsea are frequently mentioned in transfer speculation regarding his future. A potential scenario involves Gyokeres joining head coach Ruben Amorim at Old Trafford. However, with Manchester United’s existing roster including Rasmus Hojlund, Joshua Zirkzee, and Antony, it appears improbable they would acquire Gyokeres without first offloading at least one of these players. Furthermore, Dan Ashworth, who is currently Manchester United’s sporting director, was responsible for selling Gyokeres to Coventry for only £1 million in 2021 during his tenure at Brighton. Manchester City, a rival to United, might consider Gyokeres as a long-term successor to Erling Haaland if Haaland were to leave the Etihad. It is also suggested that Sporting’s director, Hugo Viana, might aim to re-sign his former Sporting player should he eventually succeed the departing Txiki Begiristain at City. Liverpool could also enter the transfer market for a forward if Mohamed Salah opts not to extend his contract and leaves Anfield next summer after an eight-year tenure. Chelsea, despite already having three strikers, has demonstrated a willingness to spend heavily in recent transfer periods. However, their North London rivals seem to present the most suitable destination for Gyokeres. For an extended period, both fans and football analysts have highlighted Arsenal’s requirement for a primary striker. With a forward of Gyokeres’s calibre, Mikel Arteta’s team could become a formidable force, positioning them as strong contenders in both domestic league and European competitions, provided he maintains his current performance level. Columnist Nedum Onuoha commented to BBC Sport, stating, “I could see that. From the style of play that I have seen from him and the intelligence he has, he is a handful.” He further added, “If he comes to England then it is important to note that he is simply coming back because he has already got experience playing here and he knows the physical level required. He comes across as very coachable so in an Arsenal system it could really work for him and them.” Onuoha concluded, “That is on the assumption that he is the sort of player that the Gunners are looking for.” Meanwhile, Gyokeres is expected to further increase his market value by continuing his prolific goal-scoring form.
