An organized gravel cycling competition in southern Scotland has announced initiatives designed to draw an increased number of riders to the region. The Gralloch, situated in Gatehouse of Fleet, Dumfries and Galloway, is a component of the UCI World Series. The event has now disclosed intentions to engage a broader demographic through the introduction of a non-competitive sportive, catering to cyclists across all skill levels. This sportive is scheduled for May 18, 2025, the day following the elite competition. Red On Sports (ROS), the event’s organizers, characterize The Gralloch as “the UK’s premier gravel race.” Their current objective is to encourage cyclists of varying proficiencies to participate in two demanding courses within the Galloway Forest Park. The extended course, designated “The Stag,” spans 111km (70 miles) and features 1,750m (5,700ft) of elevation gain, mirroring the path undertaken by elite competitors on the preceding day. A more condensed option, “The Fawn,” covers 53km (33 miles) and includes 800m (2,600ft) of ascent. Malcolm Smith, co-founder of ROS, stated: “We’re committed to making The Gralloch a flagship event that goes beyond racing. Adding the sportive lets us open up the stunning gravel routes of the Galloway Forest Park to more riders and grow the incredible community that has formed around The Gralloch. Whether you’re new to gravel or an experienced rider, the sportive promises a unique opportunity to soak in the scenery and camaraderie that makes The Gralloch weekend so special.” Over 3,000 individuals are anticipated to participate in 2025, marking the third consecutive year the event will be hosted in the area.
