Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou, who previously managed Celtic and is now in his second season with the club, has indicated that the team is “short in a couple of areas” and will “need to reinforce” during the upcoming January transfer window. This announcement follows a period where Spurs have experienced a decline in their Premier League standing, having lost three of their last four matches, which includes a 6-3 home defeat against Liverpool on Sunday, causing them to drop to 11th place in the league table. This series of results has coincided with injuries affecting several key players, notably goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, and defensive players Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero. Ahead of the team’s match against fourth-placed Nottingham Forest on 26 December, Postecoglou reiterated the club’s intention to strengthen its squad in January. Postecoglou stated, “Like I said a while ago, we’ve been planning. A lot of it was going to be around where we’re at around this time. Fair to say we’re still a little bit short in a couple of areas and we need to reinforce.” He further commented on the difficulty of the January window, saying, “January’s trickier in terms of what sort of players you can bring in. For us, ideal – for any club, I guess – you want to bring in people who are going to make you stronger.” Despite their inconsistent Premier League performance, Tottenham has advanced to the Carabao Cup semi-finals following a dramatic 4-3 victory over Manchester United earlier this month. The team also remains in contention for the next stage of the Europa League and is scheduled to face Tamworth in the third round of the FA Cup on 12 January. Postecoglou added, “It’s not like our schedule’s going to ease up at any stage. So I think it makes sense. We will try and reinforce.” He further elaborated, stating, “You don’t just want to panic and bring in anybody, that you don’t think will help our cause in the back half of the year, but I think we’ve already shown we are pretty methodical and prudent about our work.” While Postecoglou has encountered scrutiny regarding Spurs’ recent Premier League outcomes and his tactical decisions, he declined to attribute any blame to his players. He commented, “They are giving absolute maximum effort and that’s backed up by the physical parameters you put against what they’re doing. They’re trying to do it in the way that I’m asking them to. So how can I be critical of that?” Postecoglou also defended his conduct from the previous week, during which he accused a Match of the Day reporter of downplaying the significance of Tottenham’s defensive injuries following their loss to Liverpool. He stated, “I wasn’t angry, but I don’t know many managers that bounce into interviews after a defeat and are all cheery.” He added, “Fair to say I am getting tired of the same questions over and over, and perhaps after a defeat it’s easier to get a reaction.” Post navigation Celtic Defender Trusty Calls Champions League Play a ‘Dream Come True’ Mikel Arteta Addresses Player Injuries, Squad Balance, and Managerial Comparisons Ahead of Carabao Cup Match
