Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou has asserted that he and his fellow Premier League managers are deserving of “a little more respect,” stating, “’26 years of hard graft should get you more respect’.” The 59-year-old has faced criticism regarding his tactical approach throughout an inconsistent season, during which he has consistently adhered to his philosophy of high-intensity attacking football. Prior to achieving consecutive victories against Southampton in the Premier League and Manchester United in the Carabao Cup, Spurs had endured a five-match winless streak across all competitions. In the quarter-final match against United, they held a 3-0 lead with under half an hour remaining, ultimately securing a 4-3 victory after navigating a tumultuous conclusion. “You kind of feel that 26 years of hard graft [as a manager] should get you a little more respect and I’m not the only one,” Postecoglou commented. He further added, “I have seen it happen to [Aston Villa’s former Arsenal manager] Unai [Emery] and Nuno [Espirito Santo] when he was here [as Tottenham boss].” Postecoglou had previously remarked that managing Spurs was more challenging than serving as Prime Minister, attributing this to the prevalent short-term outlook. Tottenham currently occupies 10th place in the Premier League standings, even though only the top two teams, Liverpool and Chelsea, possess a superior goal difference. Postecoglou also stated: “I get that not everyone will be a fan of the way I do things and even the way I play people will have different opinions.” He continued, “That’s normal, that’s healthy but some of it has been pretty dismissive.” Spurs are scheduled to host Premier League leaders Liverpool on Sunday and will also encounter them in the Carabao Cup semi-finals. Arne Slot, the manager of Liverpool, described Postecoglou’s team as a “joy to watch” and expressed his hope that Spurs might secure a trophy as recognition for their attacking style of play. Tottenham currently sits 10th in the Premier League, trailing the top four by five points. Slot’s commendation contrasted with remarks made by former Liverpool player Jamie Carragher, who commented on Sky Sports’ broadcast of Thursday’s match that Postecoglou’s team “never change how they play no matter what the game state is”. Carragher further asserted: “I don’t think football should be played the same from minute 1-90.” In reply, Postecoglou stated: “People tell me he likes me so that’s a good thing. They say, ‘did you hear what he said? But he likes you as a person,’. So, that’s important to me.” He continued, “It’s all valid but I don’t need validation from anybody to do what I do.” Postecoglou added, “Whether you agree with my approach or not, there is validity in both and I don’t have an issue with that. I love the fact people are talking about our games and analysing our games.” Postecoglou acknowledged that pundits are compensated for their opinions but expressed his view that some of the criticism directed at him is “offensive,” and he intends to “call it out” as necessary. He further remarked: “Maybe I don’t take things as seriously as people want me to and I’m fairly dismissive of them, but that’s all right.” He concluded, “I love my life and I’ll keep doing what I’m doing.” Post navigation Leeds United’s Premier League Experience and Championship Performance Truro City’s FA Trophy Exit Marked by Manager Askey’s Frustration with Referee
