India won the 2024 men’s T20 World Cup. According to the World Cricketers’ Association, some teams from this year’s men’s T20 World Cup have not yet paid their players the full prize money. Sources informed BBC Sport that this situation impacts five of the 20 teams that participated in the tournament, held in the United States and Caribbean in June. The International Cricket Council (ICC) allocates prize money to each nation, with the respective national governing bodies tasked with distributing these funds to their players. The WCA, which serves as the global players’ union for the sport, also stated that some national governing bodies have engaged in “threatening and intimidatory behaviour” directed at players. BBC Sport has learned that the ICC is collaborating with the relevant boards to address and resolve this matter. Tom Moffat, chief executive of the WCA, commented, “We are extremely concerned with a number of countries who are still yet to pay players their prize money. We appreciate the ICC’s efforts to date in ensuring the players involved are paid in full and are certain the ICC will continue to take all appropriate steps against any boards who do not do so and to enforce their own terms of participation.” The ICC allocated a record prize fund of £8.8m for this year’s expanded tournament, which marked the first time it featured 20 teams. Teams placing between 20th and 13th received £177,000, plus an additional £24,500 for each match victory. Those finishing from ninth to 12th were awarded £195,011, while teams eliminated during the Super 8 stage received £301,400. The losing semi-finalists were awarded £620,500, the runners-up £1m, and the champions £1.9m. The nations that participated in the tournament included India, South Africa, England, Afghanistan, West Indies, the United States, Bangladesh, Australia, Sri Lanka, Netherlands, Nepal, Scotland, Namibia, Oman, New Zealand, Uganda, Papua New Guinea, Pakistan, Canada, and Ireland. BBC Sport has not been able to ascertain which specific teams’ players are impacted by this issue.
