Peter Baker, who previously secured a victory in Mauritius in 2023 by a single stroke over Adilson da Silva, successfully defended his MCB Tour Championship Mauritius title at Constance Belle Mare Plage. Baker achieved this by defeating fellow Englishman Simon Griffiths on the third hole of a sudden-death play-off. Both English competitors concluded the regular tournament, which serves as the Legends Tour season finale, by carding birdies on their final two holes. This performance resulted in them finishing tied at 16 under par, three strokes ahead of the rest of the field. During the play-off, they each recorded birdies on the first two repetitions of the par-five 18th hole. Baker then secured his victory by successfully getting up and down from a greenside bunker to make a four. Baker, who had considered withdrawing from the tournament prior to his second round due to illness, successfully retained the title he had won the previous year, a victory that had contributed to his order of merit claim. However, despite this tournament win, he was unable to retain the John Jacobs Trophy. That particular accolade was instead awarded to Brazilian Adilson da Silva, the player Baker had narrowly defeated for it in the preceding year. Simon Griffiths received the Barry Lane Rookie of the Year award as a consolation. Earlier in the competition, Baker, a participant in the 1993 Ryder Cup, completed his front nine in 35 strokes, aided by a sequence of birdie-bogey-birdie in the middle of that nine. He then gained a stroke on the 10th hole, bringing his score to 14 under. Following six consecutive pars, he reached 15 under on the short 17th. He subsequently tapped in for a four on the par-five final hole after his eagle putt, which would have secured victory, veered left. Griffiths recorded birdies on the first, third, fifth, and eighth holes, achieving an impressive front nine score of four-under 32. He then gained an additional stroke on the par-five 13th, followed by further birdies on the 17th and 18th holes. Colin Montgomerie, who was the champion on the Legends course at Belle Mare Plage in 2017, did not mount a final-day challenge on the Indian Ocean island. Colin Montgomerie had previously won at Constance Belle Mare Plage seven years ago. The eight-time European order of merit champion, Colin Montgomerie, commenced the championship with an impressive five-under 67. Despite encountering difficulties on day two, he positioned himself with a chance in the final round by securing a closing birdie, bringing his score to seven under. However, a double bogey on the second hole thwarted any prospects of early momentum. Although he recovered a stroke on the sixth, a bogey on the eighth resulted in him completing the front nine in two-over 38. Montgomerie’s weekend performance was characterized by the initial four holes of the back nine, where a bogey was succeeded by two birdies. Nevertheless, he negated this progress with a double-bogey seven on the 13th hole. A subsequent missed eight-foot birdie putt led to him recording five consecutive pars to conclude his tournament at four under par, significantly behind both Baker and Griffiths. In contrast, Keith Horne of South Africa surged into contention, achieving four birdies across five holes starting from the 2nd. He then carded a three on the par-four ninth, completing his front nine in 31 strokes and reaching 13 under par. However, a double-bogey on the 12th hole hindered his progress, and despite recovering strokes on the 14th and the final hole, it proved insufficient. Following an energetic commencement to his final round, Da Silva demonstrated consistent golf to secure his position in the order of merit race. He started with two birdies and two bogeys before stabilizing his play, recording a series of pars and three additional birdies to achieve a round of 69 and a share of seventh place. This performance ultimately allowed him to clinch the John Jacobs Trophy after an exceptionally consistent season.
