Stoke City manager Narcis Pelach has cautioned his team to anticipate a significant aerial challenge when they face fellow strugglers Luton Town at Kenilworth Road on Tuesday night. Despite Rob Edwards’ Luton side experiencing difficulties securing victories in the Championship this season, their formidable attacking duo of Elijah Adebayo and Carlton Morris presents a considerable defensive challenge. Pelach’s familiarity with Luton stems from his tenure three seasons prior as assistant manager to Carlos Corberan at Huddersfield, a period when Huddersfield narrowly overcame the Hatters in the play-offs, the season preceding Luton’s promotion to the Premier League. Speaking to BBC Radio Stoke, Pelach stated, “We played them four times that season. The ball comes in from 70 yards and if it is flicked on, it goes in your box. But, if you win that ball, you might have a chance of a counter attack.” He further elaborated, “It is case of making sure you are on it all the time. Any mistake you have to be on your toes, playing with red alarm. That is how it is there and we have to compete.” Pelach added, “You don’t play many games in the Championship like this – but you still have to play. They come into the box with long balls. It is going to be more uncontrollable.” The potential return of central defender Ben Gibson, who was absent from Saturday’s narrow loss at Sunderland due to illness, would significantly bolster the Potters’ efforts to counter Luton’s proficiency with long balls, though his current fitness level remains under assessment. Stoke’s previous encounter at Kenilworth Road, referred to as “the Kenny,” resulted in a 1-0 defeat to Luton in February 2023, during Alex Neil’s tenure, with Pelly Ruddock-Mpanzu scoring from 20 yards. Coincidentally, a year after Neil’s dismissal, the Stoke squad has undergone such extensive changes that Ben Wilmot, who was a substitute against Sunderland on Saturday, is the sole player remaining from the starting eleven of that match. Pelach also stated his intention to focus on positive aspects from the Sunderland match, as he seeks to conclude a five-game winless streak against a Luton team that has remained undefeated in their last four home fixtures. He remarked, “I want to focus on the things we did well at Sunderland. The high press was really good. But what we didn’t do well was the game management. We have to try to sort it out for Luton. We need to sort out the defensive issue we are having at the moment.” Stoke City manager Narcis Pelach’s comments were made during an interview with BBC Radio Stoke sports editor Matt Sandoz.
