Grant Ferguson, chairman of Oxford United, has stated that the termination of head coach Des Buckingham’s contract was undertaken for the club’s optimal benefit. The U’s announced their separation from Buckingham on Sunday, a decision that followed a loss to Sheffield Wednesday and left the team without a victory in its previous six Championship matches. Buckingham, aged 39, assumed the head coach position in November 2023. He guided the club to promotion into the Championship, a feat achieved for the first time in 25 years, culminating in a notable 2-0 play-off final triumph against Bolton Wanderers at Wembley. Despite acknowledging Buckingham’s crucial contribution to “one of the best days in the club’s history,” Ferguson conveyed that he and the board “firmly believe that our current position and recent form are not reflective of the potential this squad holds.” In an external statement, he elaborated, saying, “Many factors are taken into consideration with decisions like these but, ultimately, results are the defining factor.” He continued, “Given performances over a number of months, and following the recent defeat to Sheffield Wednesday, we as the board agreed that a change had to be made now.” Ferguson affirmed his commitment to appointing the “right person” as the next head coach and indicated that the club intends to reinforce its squad during the January transfer window. He further stated, “Since my appointment as chairman in the summer of 2022, the board, [CEO] Tim Williams and I have been very clear about our ambition: to establish Oxford United as a stable and sustainable Championship club.” He continued, “Whilst we are now in the Championship, we acknowledge that there is still much work to be done.” Concluding, he added, “We will forever be grateful to Des for helping us reach this point, but we believe that in order to protect the best interests of the club, this decision needed to be taken.” Post navigation Darts Star Luke Littler Tops PM in 2024 Google Search Trends Vilahamn: Arsenal Bears the Pressure in North London Derby
