Ruairi McConville, a member of Gareth McAuley’s Northern Ireland Under-19 squad, has received his inaugural call-up to the senior Northern Ireland squad for the Nations League matches against Belarus and Luxembourg. The 19-year-old Brighton defender, who is uncapped at this level, serves as captain for the Northern Ireland Under-19s and plays for his club’s Under-21 side. McConville has also previously represented his country at Under-17 and Under-16 age groups. Sunderland defender Dan Ballard is back in the squad following an injury layoff. However, Northern Ireland manager Michael O’Neill will be missing Paddy McNair and Eoin Toal for the two upcoming fixtures due to hamstring injuries. Northern Ireland is scheduled to play Belarus in Belfast on 15 November, then travel to Luxembourg for a match three days later. Speaking to BBC Sport NI, O’Neill stated, “They [McNair and Toal] started both games in October in a back three so we’ve two of our original back three unavailable to us.” He added, “We hope that Daniel will come back in, he’s back training with Sunderland – we would need his experience to help us in that situation.” O’Neill also noted, “Trai has been a mainstay for us in that back three and Ciaron Brown is an option for us as well.” O’Neill further commented that he has been closely monitoring the young player McConville. “Ruairi is a player we’ve wanted to try and get in for a little bit. Gareth [McAuley, NI Under-19 manager] rates the lad and Tommy [Wright] has had him in the Under-21s,” O’Neill remarked. He continued, “He’s at a club where they develop players as well as any and it’s a chance for us to bring him in and get our eyes on him. He comes with glowing references.” Goalkeeper Bailey Peacock-Farrell of Birmingham has rejoined the squad, having been absent from the October fixtures against Belarus and Bulgaria. Defender Kofi Balmer and forward Lee Bonis maintain their positions in the team. Mansfield Town goalkeeper Christy Pym, who received a late call-up last month, has been moved to the standby list. Ronan Hale of Ross County is not part of the squad as he awaits international clearance following his decision to change allegiance from the Republic of Ireland, a nation he previously represented at various age levels. Northern Ireland currently leads Group C3 with seven points, holding a one-point advantage over Belarus and a two-point lead over Bulgaria. In September, O’Neill’s team achieved a 2-0 victory against Luxembourg in Belfast, subsequently experiencing a 1-0 defeat in Bulgaria three days later. Their October performances included a 0-0 draw against Belarus in Hungary, followed by an emphatic 5-0 triumph over Bulgaria at Windsor Park, where Isaac Price netted a hat-trick.
