Michael O’Neill, the manager of Northern Ireland, has highlighted the significance of his squad’s development through promotion from the Nations League’s third tier. This marks O’Neill’s second tenure as Northern Ireland boss, during which he has secured seven victories in 18 games. O’Neill’s team currently leads Group C3 in the competition, having achieved two wins and one draw in their four matches played to date, with two Nations League fixtures remaining. Promotion to League B is considered by O’Neill as a vital progression in anticipation of their campaign to qualify for the 2026 World Cup. The Northern Ireland manager stated, “The situation is in our hands. We want to progress and get to the next level of Nations League football.” He further elaborated on the benefits, saying, “It has given us a chance to put a lot of young players in the team and maybe not challenge them at the top, top level of international football, which is difficult. They have had a chance to have positive experiences, gain confidence and get a consistent way of playing. ” He added that promotion would provide access to “the next tier of international football and those are the teams you have to finish ahead of if you’re going to qualify [for tournament finals].” The Northern Ireland manager expressed satisfaction that the ambiguity surrounding visa approvals for Belarus to play the match in Belfast was resolved last week. “It was difficult to prepare,” he conceded, adding, “Obviously for the [Irish Football] Association it’s difficult with that uncertainty. You want to play at home, financially it would have been difficult for us to lose out.” He also noted, “Playing in an empty stadium or even with a limited number of our fans, who would have been able to travel, wouldn’t have been ideal.” O’Neill described the situation as “a little bit tricky,” explaining, “We’ve based ourselves in Manchester for a number of the games and had really good training camps so we’ll base ourselves in Belfast from Sunday night.” After a decisive 5-0 victory against Bulgaria at Windsor Park in their previous fixture, all tickets for the upcoming match against Belarus on Friday, 15 November, have been sold. Belarus currently holds second place in the group, having accumulated six points from three games. O’Neill further commented, “The good thing is there is a lot of positivity around the team at this time and it’s good for us to be in Northern Ireland when there is that positivity and hopefully that feeds through to the boys as well.”
