Newport County is set to play at Rodney Parade this Saturday, with aspirations of attracting spectators and securing a victory. The team will face MK Dons, marking their first home match since a goalless draw against Grimsby Town on November 16. This particular match initiated a sequence of four consecutive League Two draws for the Exiles, with three of these encounters ending without any goals scored. This sequence forms part of a broader trend where Nelson Jardim’s squad has achieved only one victory across 12 matches in all competitions. Nevertheless, the achievement of three clean sheets in their last four fixtures provides a measure of optimism for a team that, just a month prior, held the distinction of having the poorest defensive record in the division. While Newport has generally found it easy to score goals, they have struggled to prevent opponents from scoring; however, they have now doubled their total number of shut-outs for the season across their last four matches. Developing a reputation for being difficult to defeat is viewed as a positive development by Jardim, who aims to sustain this level of consistency, yet acknowledges that further improvements are necessary from a team currently positioned 17th in the league standings. Jardim stated, “Some of the draws have been very good against sides doing well,” adding, “Any of those games could have gone either way; we are not too far away from winning but have to be wary we were also not too far to losing.” He further remarked, “But we need to stay consistent in our style and improving in the areas we are not quite there yet and know that down the road you will get your rewards.” Jardim asserted that he has not compromised offensive strategies to bolster defensive play, stating, “You never try to do that, you look to work on areas to improve, but you try and progress as a whole.” He elaborated, “Overall, at the start of the season we were scoring a lot but also conceding a lot and that was down a little bit to me not knowing the players, and them not being used to me and the things we wanted to do.” Jardim concluded, “But this is a process that will have ups and downs – and hopefully we can be in a situation where we only look upwards.” Jardim indicated that MK Dons, who are among the division’s leading scorers and are positioned just outside the play-off spots, will present formidable opposition. He commented, “We have started to show some consistency and had points away at tough places. We can be proud of the way we are progressing but also know we need to do more.” The Portuguese manager expressed his hope that the team’s anticipated return to their home ground will benefit their efforts. He stated, “Rodney Parade is massive for us. The fans give us so much energy and are a massive factor in us reaching our objectives.”
