Geoffroy Bony, son of former Ivory Coast international Wilfried Bony, has been signed by Newport County and will wear the number 37 shirt. The 19-year-old player officially joined the League Two club following a trial period of several weeks with the Exiles. Similar to his father, Wilfried, who played for UK clubs such as Manchester City, Swansea City (on two occasions), and Stoke City, Geoffroy also plays as a striker. Bony expressed his satisfaction with the move, stating: “It feels good to join the club. I was speaking with the manager before coming here, with him having worked at Swansea, and I really like the project he is building at Newport.” He added, “I’ve been training with the team for a few weeks now, and I can see there are some really talented players at the club.” Bony concluded by saying, “I’m eager to kick on, make an impact, and help push the team forward.” Geoffroy’s brother, Orphee, is currently a member of Newport’s under-18 squad, a team with which Wilfried Bony had previously trained during a period when he was unattached to a club. The Exiles confirmed that Bony’s performance during his trial period at Newport was impressive, leading to him signing a contract to formally become part of the team. Nelson Jardim, Newport’s head coach, previously worked within Swansea City’s academy coaching structure, making him familiar with the younger Bony’s abilities. Wilfried, a robust striker, earned 56 caps for the Ivory Coast national team, scoring 16 goals and contributing to their victory in the Africa Cup of Nations in 2015. While at Manchester City, he was a member of the squad that secured the League Cup in 2016, when Manuel Pellegrini’s team defeated Liverpool in the final via a penalty shootout. Furthermore, he is well-regarded for his two tenures at Swansea, and his career also includes winning a Czech First League title with Sparta Prague and being the top scorer in the Eredivisie in 2013 during his time at Vitesse.
