The New York Giants and quarterback Daniel Jones have “mutually agreed” to terminate his contract. This decision comes less than two years after Jones, a first-round draft pick for the team in 2019, signed a $160 million extension with the NFL franchise. Jones, who was selected in the first round of the 2019 draft, had been removed from his role as the Giants’ starting quarterback earlier in the current week. This season, the Giants have secured victories in only two out of their ten games and are currently on a five-game losing streak. Giants president John Mara stated, “Daniel came to see me this morning and asked if we would release him. We mutually agreed that would be best for him and for the team. Daniel has been a great representative of our organisation, first class in every way. His handling of this situation yesterday exemplifies just that. We are all disappointed in how things have worked out. We hold Daniel in high regard and have a great appreciation for him. We wish him nothing but the best in the future.” On Monday, Coach Brian Daboll declared that Tommy DeVito, previously an undrafted free agent, had been elevated to the role of starting quarterback. Jones, aged 27, became a member of the Giants in 2019 and received a four-year contract worth $160 million in 2023, with two years of that agreement being guaranteed. This agreement positioned him among the top-10 highest-paid quarterbacks in the NFL at the time it was signed. For the current season, he holds the 32nd rank in passer rating among all qualified quarterbacks, having recorded seven interceptions and only eight touchdowns in 2024.
