Mykhailo Mudryk was encountering difficulties at Chelsea even prior to the disclosure of an unsuccessful drug test result. The ultimate resolution remains uncertain as the Football Association proceeds with its established procedures following an “adverse finding from a urine test”. This development, however, poses a risk to any advancements the Ukraine international – who refutes any misconduct and has stated his “complete shock” – is striving to achieve under the guidance of manager Enzo Maresca. Mudryk has faced challenges since his transfer to Chelsea, known as the Blues, for a fee potentially reaching £89m, from Shakhtar Donetsk in January 2023, a move notably finalized ahead of rival club Arsenal. Several factors have been identified as contributing to his difficulties, including the pressure associated with his transfer fee, his lack of fluency in English, his reserved personality, and the succession of managers he has played under, specifically Graham Potter, Frank Lampard, Mauricio Pochettino, and Enzo Maresca. Former manager Mauricio Pochettino had previously emphasized Mudryk’s requirement for a gradual adaptation period. However, Maresca has since expanded on these points, noting Mudryk’s difficulty in assimilating tactical concepts, his struggles to occupy correct positions, his progress being “slower than others,” and stating that he simply needed to enhance his “quality” following his sole league start against Wolves in August. Mudryk required 24 matches to register his inaugural goal for the club, and prior to scoring against the Armenian team FC Noah in November, he had experienced an additional five-month period without a goal. Despite his appearances in starting lineups for Chelsea in various cup competitions, it is evident that he has encountered challenges in adjusting to the necessary culture, standard, and quality demanded.
