Fenerbahce manager Jose Mourinho has been issued a one-match suspension and a financial penalty of approximately £15,000 due to his conduct and remarks following Fenerbahce’s dramatic victory over Trabzonspor. The former Chelsea and Manchester United manager ran onto the field and attempted a celebratory knee slide after Sofyan Amrabat’s late goal secured a 3-2 win for his Fenerbahce squad in a contentious match. However, he subsequently delivered a vehement post-game criticism, denouncing refereeing standards in Turkey and appearing to challenge the impartiality of match officials. The Turkish Football Federation stated in an official release that Mourinho’s comments were “contrary to sportsmanship, sports ethics or the concept of fair play” and “were diminishing the value” of football in the country. They further asserted that the former Real Madrid and Inter Milan coach’s statements “were aimed at casting a shadow over or discrediting the impartiality of the referees and other match officials”. During the highly disputed game, Mourinho expressed dissatisfaction with Trabzonspor, the host team, receiving two penalty kicks, each following video assistant referee (VAR) reviews. He additionally believed his team deserved a penalty before Amrabat’s late winner.
